Saturday, September 13

The 120th session of The United Sacred Harp Convention met on the second Sunday and the Saturday before in September. The focus of Saturday’s singing was to debut the 2025 Revision of The Sacred Harp songbook. Blake Sisemore called the class to order by leading 32t. The opening prayer was given by Shane Brown.

A business session was held, and the following officers and committee members were elected or appointed to serve: Chairman—David Ivey; Vice Chairmen—Richard Ivey, Jesse P. Karlsberg, and Nathan Rees; Secretary—Pam Nunn; Chaplains—John Huffman, Jenna Strizak, Alvaro Witt Duarte, Samuel Sommers, and David Lee; Arranging Committee—Anna Hinton, Rebekah Gilmore, David Ivey, Helen Brown, Cindy Tanner, and Nathan Rees; Memorial Committee—Judy Caudle, Jean Seiler, and Steven Schmidgall with special memorials by Karen Rollins, Nathan Rees, Scott DePoy, and Judy Hauff; Finance Committee—Shane Wootten, Chairman, Abigail Cannon, Peter Trumbore, Shane Brown, Alvaro Witt Duarte, and Shelby Castillo; Location Committee—Tom George, Matt Hinton, Karen Rollins, and Elene Stovall; Resolutions Committee—Lisa Grayson, Betsy Jeronen, Hannah Land, and Linda Shea.

David Ivey welcomed all attendees and introduced the Revision. He then led 347b. He talked about how on October 23, 2018, the Sacred Harp Publishing Company Board of Directors had asked him to chair the Revision Committee. The committee of nine was formed and began working the next year. The heart of their job over the next seven years, as Buell Cobb wrote in his 1978 landmark book was “to improve and renew the storehouse of songs”. The book has been revised and improved from cover to cover. There were 1, 155 songs submitted. From that one hundred thirty songs were added by seventy-eight composers, forty-nine of which are living composers. These composers were from eighteen states and five countries. For today’s session, we are here first to honor God. We will also be recognizing the forty-nine living composers, most of whom are here with us. We will exclusively sing the composers’ songs and a handful of other historic songs that are new to the book. Congratulations, new composers. Today we recognize you and your songs that are newly added to The Sacred Harp: 2025 Edition.

The memorial lesson was conducted by Judy Caudle, Jean Seiler, and Steven Schmidgall. Steven read the following list of names of the sick and shut-ins: Curt Rose, Denise Kania, Peter Amidon, David Light, Wanda Capps, Margaret Keeton, Betty Shepherd, Ed Thacker, Margaret Thacker, Joyce Walton, Paul Sandefur, Brenda Dunlap, Suzanne Newton, Ginny Ely, Janet Morgan (caregiver), Don Bowen, Ted Johnson, Marcia Johnson, Dan Itestzler, Edith Woodling, Susan Johnson Marrett, Tom Waggoner, Sherry Rogers Lovvorn, Greta Holbrook, Rio Seiler, Briana Bean Hirsch, Nancy Henderson, Kate Fine, Karleen Rogers Williams, Sheila Chitwood, Katy Black, B.R. Jean Seilor spoke about being a Quaker and that the Quakers often quote “I am holding you in the Light”. That statement has come to mean a lot to her and her family. She noted that one of the names on the list was that of her step-grandson, Rio Seiler. Rio had been in a horrible accident earlier this year and was still in intensive care. She also said that whenever she talks to her stepson, she says that statement before they end their conversation. We should, as a Sacred Harp family, always hold others “in the light”. Jean led 68b.

Using various song lyrics, Judy Caudle pointed out that the memorial lesson was a time of quiet reflection, a time for memories of past singers, laughter, fellowship, and worship with those who can no longer be with us. One message always comes through during the memorial lesson which is that we are bound together by this music. We develop relationships with one another that cannot be found anywhere else on this earth. When one member hurts, we can find comfort in our music. We should always remember that death is a part of life. “Part of the host have crossed the flood, and part are crossing now”. Judy led 354b.
