Arrival, Registration, and Orientation

Registration for Camp Fasola, 2018; Youth Emphasis, began at 4:00 p.m. Campers were issued t-shirts, procedures lists, maps, and identification badges. Campers had free time for recreation, followed by counselor orientation sessions, and then followed by supper at 6:00 p.m. Every one attending camp met with David Ivey in Lakeview Lodge at 7:00 p.m. for general orientation and instructions.

Class Singing

7:30 p.m. Led by Youth Counselors. Beth Anne Clay and Tom George called the class to order by leading 82t. Drew Smith offered the opening prayer. Tuesday, July 3

Lesson: Rudiments I / Youth I

9:00 a.m. Teacher—Lauren Bock. Lauren introduced herself, and welcomed the class. She took some time to become acquainted with campers, especially the newcomers. Lauren talked about sound, noise, and music. She and the class practiced different pitches, different volumes, different rhythms, and different tempos, referring periodically to the Rudiments, pages 13 and 14. After a short break, Lauren asked seven campers to arrange themselves in height order, each holding a paper shape note. Then she asked them to arrange themselves in a major scale order, timing them. The class practiced singing the scale. Lauren talked about rhythm and keeping time, and then, practiced the scale again. The class was dismissed.

Lesson: Rudiments I / Youth II

9:00 a.m. Teacher—Stuart Ivey. Stuart welcomed the class, and briefly talked about his education in music, and his background in Sacred Harp music. He referred to the Rudiments, page 13, and explained the difference between sounds of music and sounds of noise. He talked about pitch, time, accent, and volume. He reviewed the parts: where they sit in the square, and what line of music they sing. Stuart referred to the Rudiments, pages 14 and 15, reviewing measures, bars, and length of notes. The class sang the major scale, and practiced some intervals. The class sang 59, and Ryan Nash led 272. Stuart quizzed the class on the different aspects of the songs. The class was dismissed.

Lesson: Rudiments I / Adults

9:00 a.m. Teacher—Stanley Smith. David Ivey introduced Stanley Smith to campers. Stanley shared a bit of his story, and how he came to Sacred Harp singing. The class discussed basic elements of music, including volume, parts, and pitch. Examples of volume variation included 177 (where volume variation is noted in the music) and 143 (where the volume variation is not written, but traditional). Stanley talked about plain tunes in the Sacred Harp, and led 48t and 48b. The class sang the scales, both major and minor. Stanley led 436, and dismissed the class with prayer.

Elective: Team Tunesmith I / Sacred Harp Composition

10:30 a.m. Teacher—Aldo Ceresa. Aldo welcomed the class, and offered some tips for getting started, part-writing, and basic elements of harmony. The class divided into three teams: Team 1 (Caleb Joseph Silva, Drew Smith, and Jerusha Vanderbosch); Team 2 (Isaac Lloyd, Jack Nelson, and Gideon Lloyd); Team 3 (Daniel Bearden, Ryan Nash, and Hadassah Silva). The teams will engage in a round robin style writing exercise, with results to be sung at the composium session later in the week. The class was dismissed.

Elective: Minor Music

10:45 a.m. Teacher—P. Dan Brittain. Dan welcomed the class, and led 159. Dan explained the features of minor songs in the Sacred Harp. He said the changes to the sixth note are traditional and regional to areas where Sacred Harp is common. In areas where Christian Harmony or gospel music is common, the sixth note is not typically raised. Dan led 313b, 183, 360, and 160t. There was a question and answer period. Dan drew attention to the Scottish Snap, and led 346. Dan then focused on accent, stating that accent is important to singing Sacred Harp. Dan led the class in singing 111b, 214, 216, 197, 378b, and 385b, practicing good accent. The class was dismissed.

Lesson: Learning Songs / Youth

1:00 p.m. Teachers—Tom George and Bridgett Hill Kennedy. Lesson: Rees (e)‘s Pieces

1:00 p.m. Teacher—Jesse P. Karlsberg. Jesse welcomed the class, and Sierra Saylor and Tullaia Powell led 278b. Jesse talked about the Rees brothers, Henry Smith Rees and John Palmer Rees, and said that they were major contributors to Sacred Harp music. He said they helped cement the use of gapped scales in Sacred Harp composition. Jesse distributed a packet of information, and the class sang “Dumas” by J.P. Rees, from the packet. Jesse led 385b. Jesse continued by stating that many compositions by the Rees brothers included three part harmonies. By 1870, the Rees brothers were established within the Sacred Harp community. The Rees brothers used revival songs and choruses during the Second Great Awakening. In a sense, the Rees brothers created the modern fuging tunes. The class sang 423 (an inventive fugue) and 419 (an intensive fugue). By the end of the twentieth century, J.P. Rees was the most prominent composer of the Rees brothers. He contributed compositions spanning sixty-one years. The class sang 69b, and the class was dismissed.

Elective: My Sacred Harp Journey

2:10 p.m. Teacher—P. Dan Brittain. Dan welcomed the class, and talked about his experience with Sacred Harp, and his journey that began as an adult in 1966. Dan said his career is a series of coincidences, and if he hadn’t gotten into the Army band, he probably wouldn’t have started singing. He said he began writing almost as soon as he began singing, and that his first composition of quality was “Cobb”. After retiring from the Army band, he took a job at a church in New York. He composed “Garden State” for the New Jersey convention. Dan led “Garden State”. He then moved to Arkansas. He was asked to help start a singing in Iowa, and composed “Maquoketa”. Dan led “Hauff”, “Cowling”, “Dean Street”, and “Chmielno”. The class was dismissed.

Lesson: Scales and Intervals

3:30 p.m. Teacher—Samuel Sommers. Samuel welcomed the class, and led 76t. He described music as a succession of pleasing tones. The class practiced singing the major scale and intervals. Samuel led 218. The class practiced singing the minor scale and intervals. Samuel led 165. Samuel and the class sang 96, 431, 210, 454, 302, 315, and the Star Spangled Banner. The class was dismissed.

Lesson: Rudiments II / Youth I

9:00 a.m. Teacher—Lauren Bock. Lauren welcomed the class, and taught the modes of time. The class focused on the information found on the song page, including the mode of time, repeats, rests, slurs, ties, and flags. The class practiced singing the minor scale. Songs used during the class were 274t, 65, 159, 45t, and 155. The class was dismissed.

Elective: Learning Songs with Sam

10:45 a.m. Teacher—Samuel Sommers. Samuel welcomed the class, and explained the fundamentals of starting a song, with special attention paid to a rest at the beginning. Next he covered in detail the modes of time and tempo. He explained the relationship between accent in the notes and the poetry. The class sang a number of songs, and then was dismissed.

Lesson: Rudiments II / Youth II

1:00 p.m. Teacher—Stuart Ivey. Beth Anne Clay welcomed the class, and led the singing of the major and minor scale. She led 274t. Stuart Ivey referred to the Rudiments, page 19, sections 16-=20. He reviewed notations (triplets and slurs in 272), accent (188), fermata (198), choice notes (348b), dynamics (277), and grace notes (143). Samuel Sommers talked about accent, and used boxes of different weights (primary accent being the heaviest with two bottles of water, and no accent being the lightest with nothing inside) to illustrate his point. He covered the seven modes of time. Samuel encouraged campers to accent with the voice, not the hand. Stuart discussed fuging tunes and tunes with time changes. The class was dismissed.

Lesson: Rudiments II / Adults

1:00 p.m. Teacher—Stanley Smith. Stanley welcomed the class, and led 143. He offered prayer. Stanley discussed grace notes and triplets. The class turned to page 327, and discussed the difficulty of articulating the names of the notes due to the speed at which this song is often sung. Stanley led 327, and then 273. He reviewed the elements of the song on page 165, (time, repeats, and key), and then turned to page 342, a song with the same words, but different in nature by virtue of a major key. There was discussion about keying in major and minor, and then discussion of keying in general. The class sang 101t, 64, 74b, and 104. The class was dismissed.

Lesson: A Window into Paine (Denson)

2:10 p.m. Teacher—Aldo Ceresa. Aldo welcomed the class, and led 392. He gave an introduction to the life and early singing career of Paine Denson. He outlined the contributions Paine Denson made during his lifetime to the Sacred Harp singing community and the Sacred Harp Publishing Company. Elective: Conduct of Singings and Conventions

5:00 p.m. Teacher—Jesse P. Karlsberg. Jesse welcomed Stanley Smith to join him for the discussion. Stanley related that he had been involved in organizing and maintaining several singings in southeast Alabama. He offered tidbits of information that he felt made Cooper Book singings distinctive. Jesse read excerpts from the Rudiments, page 25, chapter XI. He said this section of Rudiments was added to the 1991 Edition. The following discussion with campers revealed many similarities to singings and conventions held a hundred years ago, but also pointed to many differences. The class was dismissed.

Elective: Poetic Meter in Sacred Harp

5:00 p.m. Teacher—Samuel Sommers. Samuel welcomed the class, and led 146. He sang the notes, then used words from Amazing Grace, Gilligan’s Island, and The House of the Rising Sun. He explained that the music has various modes of time divided into measures, while the poetry has various meters divided into poetic feet. Poetry, like music, has accent which may be defined as rhythmical arrangement of syllables or words in verse, poetical measure, depending on number, quantity, and accent of syllables. Samuel reviewed examples of poetry, and the class members names the poetic feet in each example. Isaac Lloyd led 210, and the class was dismissed.

Lesson: Rudiments III / Youth I

9:00 a.m. Teacher—Lauren Bock. Lauren welcomed the class, and led 48t. She then talked about the symbols or characters found on the page, and how that effects the way the song is sang. She referred to the song on page 531, pointing out that the double ending uses different notes. Lauren reviewed notes, rests, modes of time, and repeats. She explained flats and sharps. The class sang 63, and took a short break. When the lesson resumes, the class finds felt symbols on the chair seats. The class uses these felt symbols to form a musical staff, and felt notes to form a tune. The class sings the tune. Lesson: Rudiments III / Youth II

9:00 a.m. Teacher—Stuart Ivey. Stuart welcomed the class, and reviewed repeat marks, also discussing the characters D.C. and D.S. He told the class that leading songs would be the focus for this class. He gave the following tips to help new leaders: know the song and its page number; use verbal and non-verbal communication; use a preparatory gesture; make decisions about verses and repeats before stepping into the square; and recommended singing tenor when leading. Sasha Hsuczyk demonstrated leading fundamentals, and the class practiced leading 272 and 481. The class was dismissed.

Lesson: Rudiments III / Adults

9:00 a.m. Teacher—Stanley Smith. Stanley welcomed the class, and led 166. The class talked about and sang unpublished compositions by Stanley. Stanley led “Spurlock” a fuging tune written in honor of his dear friend, Tommie Spurlock. He led “Pennsylvania”, a tune dedicated to the singers of Pennsylvania; “Hogan”, a plain tune named for Bill and Nancy Hogan; “Indiana”, music and words dedicated to singers in Indiana; “Colorado”, a tune Stanley said borrows heavily from “Idumea”, but in different meter; “New England”; and “Our Singing Band”, a tune written for use in memorial lessons for the sick and shut-ins. Samuel Sommers dismissed the class with prayer.

Elective: Thoughts on Sacred Harp Etiquette

10:45 a.m. Teacher—Buell Cobb. Buell welcomed the class, and stated that he has observed Sacred Harp practices for more than fifty years. He related some of these observations as suggestions to new singers, in an effort to help them be successful for themselves and the singing as a whole. He addressed the changes over time in the standards of dress, decorum, leading, front bench, and arranging. Buell led 425, adding an extra verse of words, and noting that the class is compliant and follows the leader, because the class wants the leader to be successful. The class was dismissed.

Elective: Dinner on the Ground

10:45 a.m. Teacher—Pam Nunn. Pam shared recipes that are tasteful and easy to prepare and transport. She also shared fun stories about Jeff and Shelbie as campers prepared punch bowl cakes for everyone to enjoy at suppertime.

Lesson: Learning Songs and Youth Memorial Lesson / Youth

1:00 p.m. Teacher—Jeannette DePoy. Jeannette welcomed the class, and was joined by Gillian Inksetter and Jonathon Smith. Jonathon and Gillian reviewed the information found on each song page (page number, key, mode of time, rests, repeats, and weird). Jeannette asked campers to choose some songs that they thought would be good to use in a memorial lesson. Leaders: Ethan Cornett 302; Taylor Cook 55; April Watkins and Sadie Bagley 209; Anna Bowen 560; Sarah Jenkins and Jacob Acton 340; Corrine Wells and Jamira Jackson 472. The teachers and class discussed reasons to learn new songs. Lesson: The Memorial Lesson

1:00 p.m. Teacher—Karen Rollins. Campers gathered in Lakeview Lodge to hear Karen Rollins talk about the memorial lesson. She began by saying that the memorial lesson is an old tradition at Sacred Harp singings. There is usually a list for names of the deceased and sick and shut-ins. The officers of the singing or convention will usually ask someone to conduct the memorial lesson, and it can be anyone. Karen encouraged campers to accept, if asked to serve. She said that there are two times during a day that are customary for the memorial lesson: the hour just before lunch and the hour following lunch. The memorial lesson recognizes those who have gone before, brings to light the humanity of the singings, and causes the realization that future singers must step up and carry on. She mentioned just a few ways of conducting the lesson, and then turned the class over to the memorial committee.

Emily Stutzman spoke in memory of the deceased, and read the following list of names: Daphene Causey, Floy Wilder, Eloise Wootten, Caleb Allred, Glenda Hopper, Arthur Gilmore, Johnnie Chafin, Susie Denson, Lily Hopper, and Hollis Gentry—Alabama; Louise Holland, Daniel Evans, and Florice Akin—Georgia; Edith Owen—Texas; Julie Vea—Wisconsin; Ann Sleeva—Illinois; Steve Helwig—Oregon; Judith McDowell and Elizabeth Rechenberg—Ohio; Darrell Swarens—Indiana; Mary Ellen Schrock—New York; Barbara Willard—Arizona. Emily led 549 in memory of the deceased.

Ryan Nash spoke on behalf of the sick and shut-ins, and read the following list of names: Velton Chafin, Ozella Blackmon, Jerry Kitchens, Ottis Sides, Linda Sides, Mike Hinton, Eugene Forbes, and Mike Jones. He led 128, and Jim Neal closed the memorial service with prayer. The class was dismissed.

Elective: The Music and Legacy of Hugh McGraw

2:10 p.m. Teacher—Jesse P. Karlsberg. Jesse welcomed the class, and Bridgett Hill Kennedy led 500. Jesse stated that Hugh McGraw was as important a figure in the Sacred Harp tradition as anyone that came before. His contributions were unparalleled in the latter part of the twentieth century. He served as Executive Secretary of the Sacred Harp Publishing Company from 1958—2002, and Executive Secretary Emeritus from 2002—2017. Blake Sisemore led 527. McGraw was involved in revising several editions of the Sacred Harp tune book from 1960—1985. He was supervisor of the complete revision that was published on 1991. David Ivey served with Hugh on that committee, and spoke of the process and the success of the current revision. Barrett Patton led 548. McGraw traveled extensively with other singers as ambassadors for Sacred Harp singing. This group appeared in many conferences, folk festivals, and church associations. Buell Cobb, as one among these singers, spoke of Hugh’s strong personality, bold leadership, and confidence. Karen Rollins led 225t, and the class was dismissed.

Elective: May I Never Read in Vain

4:30 p.m. Teacher—Lela Crowder. Lela welcomed the class, and spoke of how rhetoric demonstrates the wonderful words. She pointed out six important things every reader should know: a writer creates the text; a writer has a purpose (persuade, inform, or entertain); a writer recognizes an audience; a writer’s tone equates with some emotion; a writer uses form (in the Sacred Harp that is hymn, ode, or anthem); a writer conveys as message. Lela said that metaphor is hugely important. The class explored some metaphors used in the text of the songs in the Sacred Harp. For example, barren wilderness (the world is a confusing place) vs. Canaan/Heaven (beautiful imagery). Another example, scorching sand vs. water. Symbolism is also important in the words of the Sacred Harp tunes, the cross being a very big one: everyone has something to bear, but there’s a crown. Campers shared some favorite words, and then the class was dismissed.

Elective: Team Tunesmith II / Composium

4:30 p.m. Teacher—Aldo Ceresa. Aldo welcomed campers and team members. Team members were Isaac Lloyd, Drew Smith, Jerusha Vanderbosch, Becca Hawkins, Gideon Lloyd, Jack Nelson, and Ryan Nash. Campers sang each composition, and discussion followed, noting difficult intervals, but also noting well done parts. The class was dismissed.

Community Singing

After breakfast, everyone met in The Ark with Camp Director David Ivey for closing remarks and farewells. The group sang 62, and took the parting hand. Samuel Sommers offered the closing prayer, and camp was dismissed.
