Cleburne County Convention

The 120th session of the Cleburne County Convention was held at Lower Cane Creek Primitive Baptist Church, near Heflin, Alabama, on the third Sunday in August. Stanley Edwards called the class to order leading 56t.

Ed Thacker conducted the introductory lesson from a 1936 edition of The Sacred Harp, donated to the convention by Med and Al Huester in memory of J.W. Laminack. The book was given with instructions that this is the only time the book can be used. He led 48t, 77t, and 176b. Cecil Roberts offered the morning prayer.

Glenda Collins brought the class back to order leading 100 and 101t. The memorial lesson was conducted by Karen Rollins and Pearl Guier. Karen Rollins read Proverbs 10:7 and the names of the following deceased: Renea Campbell, John Etheridge, Mattie Ivey Townsel, and Eddie Albright Hart. She led 285t in their memory.

Pearl Guier read the names of the sick and shut-ins as follows: Mary Florence Smith, George and Lucy Garner, Teenie Moody, Bud and Sammie Oliver, S.T. and Lessie Reed, Shelbie Sheppard, Reba Norton, and Jimmie Denney. Jeff Sheppard led 340 in their honor. The memorial lesson was closed with prayer offered by Eschol Hughes. Cecil Roberts offered the blessing for the noon meal.

LUNCH

The afternoon session began with Bridgett Hill leading 391. A business session was held to elect officers for the following year. Those elected or appointed to serve were: Chairman—Stanley Edwards; Vice Chairman—Bridgett Hill; and Secretary—Donna Bell.

A proposal was made to hold next year’s Cleburne County Convention at Old Harmony Primitive Baptist Church. It was decided that Old Harmony Primitive Baptist Church will host the Cleburne County Convention in 2010 on the third Sunday in August.

Following announcements, Stanley Edwards led 42 as the closing song. Elder Lewis Norton offered the closing prayer, and the class was dismissed.
