Lincoln’s Birthday Singing

The 33rd annual Lincoln’s Birthday Singing was held on the second Saturday in February at Ida Noyes Hall, University of Chicago, in conjunction with the 65th annual University of Chicago Folk Festival. The class was called to order at 3:10 p.m. by Brady Santoro leading 59. Because this singing is a workshop intended for people who are new to Sacred Harp, Brady turned the floor over to Ginny Landgraf for an explanation of the Rudiments of shapenote singing, using 111b as a teaching example. Ginny ceded the floor to Lisa Grayson for a continuation of the singing school. Lisa used 47b for her portion of the singing school. Leaders: Randy Neufeld 99; June Murphy 98; Ginny Landgraf 504.
Lisa Grayson continued the singing school with a discussion of the development of singing with shaped notes and the history of shapenote singing in the United States and internationally. Lisa Grayson continued the singing school with a Question and Answer session. Leaders: Eileen Ferguson 547; Susie Kauffman 148. After announcements, the class took the parting hand while singing 347.
