Labor Day Singing

The 101st session of the annual Labor Day singing was held on the first Monday in September at Shoal Creek Church in Talladega National Forrest, Cleburne County, Alabama. Cecil Roberts called the class to order by welcoming the singers and visitors, and then leading 49b. Cecil Roberts offered the morning prayer, and led 49t. Leaders: Judy Chambless 82t; Philip Denney 84, 73t; Robert Chambless 68b, 70t; Glenda Collins 32t, 340 (in honor of Virginia Dyer); Chris Nicholson and Charity Vaughn 212, 34b; Winfred Kerr 500, 544 (both songs in memory of Rebecca Over); Barbara Brooks 119, 159.

RECESS

Oscar McGuire brought the class back to order leading 31b. Jane Sanders from the Preservation Committee gave the history of the church, and a report on the work that the board members had arranged through several organizations. She also gave a financial report saying many people and groups had given money so the repairs could be completed.

Cecil Roberts gave the memorial lesson for the sick and shut-ins (Virginia Dyer, Barry Rollins, Marlon Wooten, Mary Wright) and the deceased (Rebecca Over, David Rousseau, Floyd Nicholson, Jr., Baron Powers). Chris Nicholson led 45t, and Robert Chambless closed the memorial service with prayer.

LUNCH

Cecil Roberts called the class back to order leading 76b. Leaders: Chris Nicholson and Charity Vaughn 39t, 339; Fallon Dyer 146, 176t; Glenda Collins 99; Glenda Collins and Fallon Dyer 472 (in honor of Virginia Dyer); Bert Collins 97, 335; Oscar McGuire 276, 336. Cecil Roberts called a business meeting to discuss the singing and whether to try again next year to have a singing or wait until the virus was gone. The singers did not want to stop the singing but to keep trying to hold on for better days. The following officers were elected for next year: Chairman—Cecil Roberts; Co-Vice Chairmen—Virginia Dyer and Fallon Dyer; Secretary—Judy Chambless. After the close of the business meeting, announcements were made. Cecil Roberts led 285t as the closing song. Judy Chambless offered the closing prayer.
