Minutes of Sacred Harp Singings

The 39th session of the Smith Memorial Sacred Harp Singing was called to order by Kristie Powell leading 406 (CB). Robert Vaughn offered the opening prayer. Leaders: Kristie Powell 68t (CB); Mike Hinton 68b, 63; Tammy Powell 163b, 217; Gaylon Powell 208, 298; Peggy Ray 568, 47t; Donald Ross 81b, 54; Olivia Powell 56t, 282; Kit Alderman 148, 410t; Diane Ross 480, 40; Robert Vaughn 357 (CB), 482 (CB); Myrl Jones 491 (CB), 300 (CB), 142 (CB). Robert Vaughn and Kevin Powell were appointed as the memorial committee.

RECESS

Mike Hinton called the class back together by leading 87. Leaders: Kevin Powell 36t, 535; Tina Walston 573 (CB), 572 (CB); Monica Hill 500 (CB), 61 (CB); Robert Walston 501 (CB), 45t (CB).

The memorial lesson was conducted. Robert Vaughn led 73t (CB) for the following sick and shut-ins: Curtis Owen, Azalee Barnett, Margaret Roundsaval, Sue Utz, Curtis Jones, Landis Powell, and Charlotte Powell.

Kevin Powell led 503 in memory of the following deceased: Steve Helwig—Oregon; Daphene Causey—Alabama; Berkley Moore—Illinois; Julie Vea—Wisconsin; Louise Holland and Hugh McGraw—Georgia; Darrell Swarens—Indiana; Frank Price, Amy Denison, Peter Nichols, Julia Welch, Jane Goforth, Marian Grant, and Edith Owen—Texas. Donald Ross closed the memorial lesson with prayer.

A business meeting was held. Ken Smith opened a discussion about the continuation of the singing. The members are aging, and there is lack of support. Some of the family wanted to keep the singing going. No decision about discontinuation was made at this time. The following officers were nominated to serve next year: Chairman—Mike Hinton; Vice Chairman—Tina Walston; Secretary—Tammy Powell; Treasurer—Barbara Smith; Assistant Treasurer—Sue Utz; Chaplain—David Jones. David Jones offered the noon prayer.
