The 74th annual Hopewell Homecoming Sacred Harp singing was held at Hopewell Primitive Baptist Church in Oneonta, Alabama, on Saturday before the second Sunday in June. The singing was not held in 2020 or 2021 due to the Covid pandemic, and as a result this year’s singing is only one day instead of two. Terry Hullett called the class to order by leading 81t and 129. Doyle Alexander offered the morning prayer.

The memorial lesson was conducted by Philip Gilmore and Linda Thomas. They led 45t in memory of the following deceased: Jewel Wootten, Coy Ivey, Mary Ruth Stiefel, Bill Windom, Velton Chafin, Ottis Sides, Margaret Spurlock, Jerry Capps, Joan Aldridge, Betty Sue Johnson, Jimmy Wadsworth, Virginia Lowe—Alabama; Sonny Erwin and Curtis Owen—Texas; Bill Beverly—Michigan; Charlene Wallace—Georgia; Rebecca Over—United Kingdom. They also sang for the following sick and shut-ins: Margaret Thacker, Ed Thacker, Henry Guthery, Margaret Keeton, Joe Gilmore, Leslie Gilmore, Marlin Beasley, Juanita Beasley, Marlon Wootten, and Chita Blakeley. David Ivey closed the memorial lesson with prayer.

David Ivey and Rodney Ivey presented a plaque from the Sacred Harp Publishing Company honoring the loving contributions and life-long support of shareholder Jewel Wootten, who passed away in July, 2020. The plaque was presented to Jewel’s son, Terry Hullett.

LUNCH

Philip Gilmore brought the class back together by leading 278b and 340.
