Special Inaugural Singing
from the Georgian Harmony

Hollingsworth Home, Ila, Georgia

Saturday, February 16, 2008

John and Elsie Hollingsworth hosted a special singing at their home in Ila, Georgia, to debut The Georgian Harmony, a songbook of shape note compositions by Raymond C. Hamrick of Macon, Georgia. John Hollingsworth called the class to order by leading 29. The opening prayer was offered by John Plunkett.

The following officers were elected: Chairman—John Plunkett; Vice Chairman—John Hollingsworth; Secretary—Jane Spencer.

John Plunkett spoke on the history of The Georgian Harmony, and emphasized that the book is currently an ongoing project to publish Raymond Hamrick’s compositions, with support from the South Georgia Sacred Harp Singing Convention. Raymond Hamrick expressed his appreciation for the hard work that John Hollingsworth and John Plunkett have continued to pour into this project. John Hollingsworth thanked Mr. Hamrick for his considerable contributions.

Mr. Hamrick reminded the class that because this music was new to most of us, we would be experiencing lessons in their truest forms, as did the singers who sang shape note music before there were recordings to rely upon.
